Album of the Week: Apifera - Overstand

We've been fans of Yuval Havkin aka Rejoicer for a while now. The Israeli keyboardist and producer was involved in a lot of great projects (Buttering Trio, Time Grove, Masok, ...) released by Tel Aviv's Raw Tapes label, garnered international attention with 2018's 'Energy Dreams' and pushed the envelope on 'Spiritual Sleaze' - one of our favourite albums of 2020. On that last album, he got help from frequent collaborators and fellow Israeli jazz cats Nitai Hershkovits (keys), Amir Bresler (drums) and Yonatan Albalak (bass); this is their first effort as Apifera
Just like 'Spiritual Sleaze', 'Overstand' feels like a soundtrack for delightful dreams. What does that mean? Hard to explain, really. We hear psychedelica and spirituality, hiphop-infused jazz, harmonies inspired by modern classical music, African music, and everything in between; played by amazing musicians that have been given lots of room to improvise. Hope that gives you an idea. It doesn't? Don't worry: you can give the record a spin below... Enjoy!

For fans of: Kamaal Williams, BadBadNotGood, Debussy, Rejoicer, ...
