Album of the Week: Eric Lau - Examples

London-based producer and DJ Eric Lau returns to surface with 'Examples', his first release for First Word - home to boundary-crossing artists like Tall Black Guy, Bastien Keb, Kidkanevil, Ross McHenry and many others. Needless to say Lau - known for workin' with and producin' for the likes of Guilty Simpson, Hawk House, Homeboy Sandman, Yussef Kamaal and countless others - fits perfectly into First Word's impressive roster with his undeniable talent for melding the best elements of soul, jazz and funk into smooth grooves and breathtaking instrumentals. Featuring a whopping 28 - mostly short, but oh so sweet - tracks, 'Examples' gives Lau the perfect opportunity to showcase his craft. From smooth and jazzy but drum-heavy tracks ('Circles', 'It's Rainy', 'Lau's Lament', 'Open Up') over spinesnappin' heavy hitters ('RAHW', 'De La') to Brazil-inspired gems ('Bas', 'It's Okay', Masamba'): Lau doesn't discriminate in his quest for dopeness. I'm really grateful this talented cat took time out of his busy schedule lending his skills to other artists to expand his own body of work. Do yourself a favour and give 'Examples' a listen below, or order your copy via iTunes or bandcamp... Enjoy!
