Sunday Soulschool: Ruth Copeland - The Medal

'The Medal' is the monumental opener of Ruth Copeland's 1971 album 'I Am What I Am', her second LP for Holland-Dozier-Holland's Invictus-label. The British-born Copeland moved to Detroit in 1967 and became associated with George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic-movement through her producer, manager and husband Jeffrey Bowen. She wrote, co-wrote, produced and co-produced nearly half of the songs Parliament made for the Invictus-label, in addition to releasing her first two albums with Clinton's help. After leaving Bowen and Invictus, Copeland moved in with Sly Stone, who wasn't too keen on letting her perform or grow musically. She left for New York, where she met Daryl Hall, who helped her get signed to RCA. After releasing her final album in '76 ('Take Me Back to Baltimore'), she retired from the music business... Enjoy 'The Medal'!
