The Ingredient: Doris - You Never Come Closer

The MF DOOM-featuring 'Closer' was one of my favourite cuts on 2005's 'The Further Adventures of Lord Quas', the sophomore album of Madlib's wacky alter ego Quasimoto: DOOM's inimitable flow combined with Quas' hilarious antics over a loop that is as funky as it is sinister. That loop turned out to be a sample of 'You Never Come Closer', the best track on the 1970 album 'Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby' by Gothenburg-born singer Doris. Having recorded with local Swedish bands like The Strangers, Plums and The Dandys and having released her debut album 'Svenssons Doris!', 'Did You...' was supposed to be Doris Svensson's big break-through and her introduction to a larger, English-speaking audience. Most of the lyrics were written by Scottish writer Francis Cowan and Swedish composer Berndt Egerbladh took care of the musical aspect, but  sadly the record completely tanked. It wasn't until British label Mr Bongo reissued the record in 1996 that it started getting the recognition it clearly deserves; nowadays you can even find it on the 'GTA V'-soundtrack... This Swedish funkpop-oddity was obviously way ahead of its time...
Enjoy the strange and irresisitible 'You Never Come Closer'...
