Move over, winter. Summer's here. 'Voiciii' - the new, third album of Voilaaa and the latest offering of French producer Bruno Hovart (the man behind other funky projects like Patchworks and Mr President) - brings back the sunshine to our lives. We're serious: if this highly infectious and immersive assortment of afro-disco gems does not put a giant smile on your face, you might want to go see a doctor.
This album is such a treat, it's hard to pick favourites. There's the irresistible afro boogie of opener 'Assia', the funky female empowerment anthem 'Woman Can Do', the humorous 'François, Va te Laver', the dynamic 'Fighting Slowly', ... There's not a single skippable track on this record, really.
Hovart also pays tribute to the recently deceased Manu Dibango on no less than two tracks ('Manu Écoute Ça...' and 'Tenor Jam for Manu') and created a wonderful upbeat version of Fela's 'Water No Get Enemy'.
He's not the only one who deserves credit, though: he is joined by an impressive line-up of phenomenal artists like Pat Kalla, Lass, Ayuune Sule, Rama Traore, David Walters and saxophonist Boris Pokora, all of whom seem to be having an amazing time bringing Hovart's tracks to life. And so will you if you give this album a listen. Add some Voilaaa to your life. You won't regret it.
