Stimulator Jones made quite a splash when Stones Throw released his 'Exotic Worlds and Masterful Treasures' a couple of years ago. His supersexy brand of funk-infused late 80s/ early 90s R&B walked the fine line between pastiche and hommage without falling off, securing the record a spot among our 2018 favourites. No vocals, R&B or (overt) sexiness this time around. No drum machines or computers either, because Jones decided to do things the old fashioned way: by hand.
The result? Beautiful latin jazz, fusion and library motifs that sound like they were crafted in the seventies, reverse engineered lo-fi hiphop beats and a fat slice of dub. That may sound like the record lacks clear direction, but that's not true: 'La Mano' is a very versatile but cohesive album that showcases Jones' musicianship. We're sure we'll be able to spot his name in the production credits of the albums of equally adventurous artists in the years to come. Highly recommended!
