2019: Albums of the Year (#10 - 01)

My ten favourite records of this year... Click the album title to listen, enjoy!

10. Ivan 'Mamão' Conti - Poison Fruit (Far Out)
Brazil's best drummer may have reached the age of 73, but still manages to blow us away with this infectious and eclectic new album...
Listen to 'Encontro'

09. SiR - Chasing Summer (TDE)
If the dreadlocked crooner doesn't achieve global superstardom with this album, I think it's fair to say that modern R&B is dead... So many earworms...
Listen to 'Mood'

08. Shafiq Husayn - The Loop (Nature Sounds)
Well worth the wait, this adventurous journey into the realm of the Sa-Ra Creative Partner...
Listen to 'Between Us 2'

07. Altin Gün - Gece (Glitterbeat)
More danceable and synth-heavy than its predecessor, but it blew us away just as easy... Altin Gün is so much more than a band bringing new life to traditional Turkish music; they may well be at the forefront of a new era for Turkish music and psychedelica...
Listen to 'Süpürgesi Yoncadan'

06. Sault - 5/7 (Forever Living)
Not one but two excellent albums connecting 70s funk and soul to the irresistible cool of New York's no-wave scene... Addictive stuff...
Listen to 'Don't Waste My Time'

05. Benny Sings - City Pop (Stones Throw)
The album that might finally open the door to (well-deserved) global recognition for the amicable Dutch superstar...
Listen to 'Not Enough'

04. Tyler, the Creator - IGOR (Columbia)
If you would have told me that the leader of the bunch of young rascals I saw tearing down Amsterdam's Melkweg eight years ago would go on to create classic, genre-bending albums, I'm pretty sure I would have laughed in your face. There really is no telling what else this man is capable of...
Listen to 'EARFQUAKE'

03. Durand Jones & The Indications - American Love Call (Dead Oceans)
All hits and no misses on this incredible sophomore album by what may turn out to be the best post-2000 soul band...
Listen to 'Long Way Home'

02. Kit Sebastian - Mantra Moderne (Mr Bongo)
Second band in this top ten to look at the Anatolian seventies, balancing that inspiration with a passion for tropicalia and chamber pop. Doesn't make any sense on paper, but our ears don't seem care... Impressive debut...
Listen to 'Mantra Moderne'

01. Jitwam - Honeycomb (Tartelet)
Another top spot for the globetrotting producer, who seems to have the ability to create electronic soul music containing the exact amounts of jazz, funk and hiphop... Can't wait to see what else this guy has up his sleeve...
Listen to 'busstop'
