The Ingredient: David McCallum - The Edge

In this new series I will be highlighting some of my favourite samples... First up is David McCallum's 'The Edge', which most people will immediately recognise as the basis for Dr. Dre's iconic 'The Next Episode'. Born as the son of a well respected Scottish orchestra leader (David McCallum Sr. was the head of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Scottish National Orchestra), McCallum Jr. attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and went on to play the popular Illya Kuryakin-character in the 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'-series and -films. Most young people will recognise McCallum as Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard, the chief medical examinor in the immensely popular 'NCIS'-series. Being a talented multi-instrumentalist, McCallum released four albums in the late sixties. The second one, 'Music: A Bit More of Me' was produced by the great David Axelrod, which explains the asthonishing arrangements. Enjoy 'The Edge'...
